The Recipe
The late Fleta Johannson of Columbus, Indiana, had the original recipe for the famous soup served in the U.S. Senate restaurant. It is indeed MOST delicious no matter which side of the political aisle you are on!

Ham bone with meat on it or 2-3 ham hocks
3 qt. water
1/2 C. mashed potatoes
3 onions, chopped very fine
1 whole bunch celery with tops, finely minced
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 C. chopped parsley
1 red sweet pepper, cut up finely
Drain water off of soaked beans and place into a large soup pot.
Add the rest of the ingredients except for the sweet pepper.
Remove bone and cut off and mince the meat. Add back to the pot.
Add sweet pepper and salt and pepper to taste. Cook another 1/2 hour.
Serve. Freezes well.
