BOURBON STREET BLACK BEAN SOUP

Here comes yet another interesting recipe from that first grade classroom at Triton Elementary. I have to admit that Abigails version IS most unusual. One would no doubt need a huge glass of water close at hand!
MACARONI AND CHEESE by Abigail Eck
1 cup water
52 noodles
1 cup cheese
1 cup pepper
Put in 1 cup water. Poor it in the bowl. Poor in 52 noodles. Poor in 1 cup cheese. Poor in 1 cup pepper. Mix it. Makes 5 servings.

BREAKFAST SAUSAGE PATTIES

My mother trained to be a teacher at Madam Blakers in Indianapolis, I was a teacher, my husband taught as did my younger sister, so it was no surprise to M.E. that Mattie made up lesson plans for a session of school every week day during the boys summer break. She got too busy to do this last summer and realized that skills were lessened when school began in the fall. Isaac needed special help with writing his letters. Mattie would have him work on one or two each day by having the child write a whole line of each letter. Isaac grumped about having to do so many. He soon learned not to crowd the letters (kissy close he called them) but to leave space so he would not have to write so many. He is a sly one, that Isaac!

The day of the 2007 running of the Indy 500 race found Nate and Stephen in attendance. Mattie and Isaac went to church as she was teaching Isaacs class for the month of May. It was Pentacost Sunday. The lady leading the little ones for the Childrens Moment inquired, Does anyone know what is special about today? Ikes little hand shot up like Harry Potters friend, Hermione. This is a special day because we dont have to go to school! was his answer much to the amusement of the congregation. Bravely continuing on, the lady asked the group if anyone remembered what happened at Easter? Again, that same pudgy hand shot up in the air and the answer was, Jesus died on the cwoss for us!

FRENCH PEAS FARMER STYLE
-
After we moved to a one level home, our kids lived in our saltbox until their new farmhouse was built. This entailed our having to get rid of the antiques and stuff that neither we nor the kids could use. Therefore, in September, there was an auction in Delphi called by Doug Davies. It took him and his men three trips to move it all and the sale itself ran all day. Friends thought we should not attend the sale but we did and had a blast! We saw many friends and former students who all bought various things they wanted. At the preview on the day before the sale, I had a wonderful visit with Terri Baxter and her in-laws. I got to see a picture of a beautiful boy and girl, Terris grandkids. There is nothing I like better than to hear stories about little uns and Terri had one for M.E. When Lucy was around three and Josh had not quite arrived yet, Terri decided that she wanted to take her granddaughter on a Disney cruise. Grandpa Bill thought she was much too young but Gramr won out. Not only did Lucy enjoy the cruise, but so did Gramr and the whole ship was entertained by this vivacious young lady! Well, a couple weeks later, Lucy made one of her numerous phone calls to her Gramr. At the end of their conversation, Lucy asked, Gramr, what you say we sleep tonight and do that cruise again tomorrow? Did Lucy like going on a cruise? You betcha she did!

Our poor daughter had a horrible morning the day after Election Day last November. First of all, Stephen called her from work to inform her that he had just been removed from his job with Rolls Royce! When she began to hyperventilate, he then explained that due to the company having a U.S. government contract, the work could not be done by a foreign firm so he was now working for the American counterpart of Rolls Royce. Stephen thought it funny. His other half was NOT amused. Mattie had just calmed down from that scare, when the school called. The office gal said, Now, dont worry Mattie but while the first graders were practicing for their program tonight, Isaac collapsed and is here in the nurses office! All Mattie could think of as she drove to the school at the speed of sound was that Isaac was suddenly hit with a low sugar level which could cause fainting, a coma and possible death. Well, all turned out well. His sugar reading was not low. It seemed he had got hot standing on the next to the top row and ended up fainting, receiving a cut place on his chin when he fell. He was able to sing that night at the very nice Veterans Day program but he was placed on the front row. The teachers were NOT taking any chances in case he should over heat again!

One Sunday during church last summer, Ms Patty gave children up front for the Childrens Moment each a puppet depicting a different profession. During the session, she asked the group, What is a minister? Nates hand shot up of course and he said, A minister is a person who gets up and talks to you. During the lesson, however, the puppets began to act up. Nates and Isaacs puppets began to fight and then little Emma Messers and Isaacs puppets got into an entanglement. Emma is a little under two years younger than Isaac. When in Sunday School class, she always wants to sit by Isaac and talks to him ALL the time. We think she likes him. Well, whats NOT to like, I say?

Now folks, Im gonna be in REALLY hot water with Isaacs mommy and his grandpa, for neither cottoned onto my sharing this incident. However, my sister told me she felt that itd be a shame not to give you readers a hearty laugh, so here goes: Whenever Mattie would mix a cake or cookie dough in her mixer, Isaac would be right there beside her standing on a stool to help as he put it. Mattie was in the process of making dough to bake into cookies to take to the schools teachers lounge before Christmas. All of a sudden, Isaac let forth with a series of very soft pftpftpfts! The mommy looked down at the kid in surprise and he looked up at her, smiled from ear to ear and stated, That was ME Mommy! The next time Im fully loaded, Ill let YOU pull my finger! Mattie was absolutely got by this promise of Ikes. She was bumfoozled, for she couldnt figure out where the child had come up with that. It turned out that Stephen admitted to the pulling of the finger part but had NO idea where Isaac got the idea of getting fully loaded! Kids learn more than the 3 Rs in school!

Well, last October, our kids had twice the popcorn products to sell since BOTH boys were Cub Scouts. To sell the popcorn products, the parents decided to have both boys go to each house together with Daddy in the background and Mommy in the car with the goods. Each boy would take a turn to do the talking while the other one would hand over a list of what was being sold. After discussing what they should say to each prospective customer, Mattie had the boys practice on her by coming to their front door and she answering their knock. So, Mommy Customer showed delighted surprise at seeing two oh-so-cute and eager Cub Scouts at her door. Nate explained that they were selling popcorn products so that they could have summer camp, special events and the Pinewood Derby among others. Mattie was encouraged to look over the list proffered by the Tiger Cub Scout. Mattie said she would buy two items. Then Nate said, You get the cash and Ill get the corn!

Since she was the vice-president of the Triton Elementary P.T.O., Mattie was in charge of the Santa Workshop at the beginning of December. Her job consisted of getting volunteers to help set up tables in a room off the library which could be locked up at night and to also help the students with their purchases. One day was spent in having every classroom from pre-school through fourth grade to see the items and their prices from twenty-five cents to several dollars. Then groups took turns shopping the next three days. The first day Mother Nature threw a monkey wrench into Matties day by leaving a blanket of snow, slick country roads and the school day itself being postponed for two hours. Now, this is very serious business for these children who buy for the immediate family and grandparents and so forth. The first day a kindergarten group came through. One item that seemed to catch the eye of a little girl was a paperweight that said MOM and was in the shape of a diamond. Mattie heard the little one remark, Oh my! Look at this! A diamond for only $7.00! What intrigued Mattie was that the tyke knew what a diamond was and even knew that they were expensive!

It seemed as though Providence stepped in when it came to the kids getting a kitten. Mattie had mentioned one day to Dorothy Wilfong that they were going to the pound to get one. A few days later, they were out and about so Mattie cell phoned the pound but it was closed. When they got home, there was a message from Steve Wilfong saying he had found a stray kitten in his barn that morning and it had their name written on it! The kids jumped back into the car and hurried down to pick up a black and white kitten. Her full name is Mamie Rose, named after President Eisenhowers wife and Rose Wilfong. Their boy cats were named after U.S. presidents middle names but hey! this one was a girl! Well, the time came when she had to be neutered and they and the vet, Dr. Painter in Wannamaker, decided to also have her front claws removed at the same time. So the running joke among the four Krautheims all the week before went something like this: Mamie Rose is going to get fixed this week! The reply would be,Why is she getting fixed? She aint broke! Poor thing had been so spoiled that she meowed the whole time while there. Mattie thinks the vet was glad to see her go home. Mamie insisted on being carried around at first and would meow all the time. Her volume dial had also been turned up and got stuck there, for instead of a lady-like dainty meow, she would bellow with a gigantic, MEOWRRRR!!

Mattie took Nate and Isaac to school early one day in February when she was subbing for a gal in the office. There just happened to be Addison, a girl from Ikes room there early as well due to relatives working at the school. Ike animatedly greeted the little girl and she gave him a hello then had to leave. Mattie asked Ike if Addison was his girlfriend and he informed her she was. Does Addison know she is your girlfriend, Isaac? and then, putting a finger up to his lips Isaac vigorously shook his head and said, Id like to keep it a secret! Isaac was looking forward to giving Addison a valentine. Of course, he gave everyone in his class a 3-D dinosaur valentine!

Watching car races on TV is a favorite past time at the Krautheim household. One day, the parental units were sitting at the table eating their meal while the boys were allowed to be down on the floor nearer to the TV. Nate early on picked his favorite driver, Tony Kanaan, who drives in the IRL in the 7-11 car no less. Why was this particular driver chosen? It was obvious to Nate. Tonys car was GREEN! Any color as long as it is green! Well, during this particular race they were all watching, Tony crashed his car early on and was put out of commission. Before Mattie knew it, Nate was at the table finishing his meal. When asked why the change of venue, Nates answer was, Tony is out of the race so there is no need to watch it anymore! With no spot of green to watch, Nate was not interested!

One morning at the Wilfong house in Boggstown, crisis #1 occurred. Rose found a tear in her lucky pants and so what in the world was she going to wear to school that day????? Then, morning crisis #2 raised its ugly head. Their 14 1/2 year old dog, Zip, spends nights in the basement. She tends to awaken very confused and cant remember how to climb the basement steps. So trying to handle the situation and make breakfast too, Dorothy called for Rose to help her get Zip up the steps. Rose was able to find another pair of pants and she used her animal charm to teach Zip to climb the steps. All the while, Ben (the 8 year old engineer) was helpful in trying to design a deconfusion chamber! He said it was for Zip but Dorothy thought she could use it, too. It is nice to start the day with a smile.
